The Rabbit/GTI underpinnings get a considerable massage in its transition to becoming an R32. Wider and lower than the GTI, the R32 also adds twin exhausts, 18-inch wheels, xenon headlamps, and a distinctive grille, along with body color trim and a rear roof spoiler.
Along with stability control, anti-lock brakes, and brake assist, the R32 piles on more standard equipment, like automatic climate control, a CD stereo system with ten speakers, cruise control, and an alarm system.
VW registered potential buyers for the new R32 through its Web site, www.vw.com, since only 5000 copies of the R32 are being imported. Current owners of R32s and GTIs were given priority in purchasing a certificate that they present to a VW dealer with their deposit. Nearly 1000 previous owners signed up to get their copies of the R32 when it goes on sale early in the fall for an MSRP of $32,990.
