Infiniti’s next crossover vehicle – a compact ute coming by year’s end -- won’t be a version of the Nissan Rogue shown off at the Detroit auto show, says one company official. Instead, the new crossover is based on the rear-drive platform underpinning the G35 sedan and coupe.

The G35 Coupe, by the way will be shown in sketch form this week, prior to a New York auto show concept debut. Both the new compact crossover and the next G Coupe will be shown at the Javits Center show, which opens to the media on April 4, 2007.

Meanwhile, at Detroit, Infiniti offered up good cappuccino and a revised QX56 sport-ute with a much more lavish interior than before. The 2008 model, which goes on sale in April of this year, gets new front and rear styling, a roof rack, 20-inch chromed wheels, and a retrimmed interior with a new electroluminescent gauge set, a third-row power folding seat, and a heated steering wheel on four-wheel-drive models. The standard audio system is now a Bose setup with a 9.5GB hard drive for storing music files, along with a Compact Flash slot; the upgrade setup incorporates a DVD nav system with an 8-inch screen and XM navTraffic info.
