Mercedes revealed one of the worst-kept secrets of the 2007 Detroit auto show as it showed off its Concept Ocean Drive. The concept is a convertible version of the S-Class sedan.

The Detroit concept is what Mercedes calls a “one-off creation” that revives its tradition of large luxury convertibles. Two-tone paint and exotic materials inside, the German automaker waxes poetic, is “almost an open invitation to go on a ‘topless’ cruise.”

Dieter Zetsche, CEO of DaimlerChrysler and the current head of the Mercedes group, told audiences that he wanted Mercedes to create a "spectacular, fresh and all-new design concept for Mercedes." Though he made no promises, Zetsche said if "everyone likes it as much as you do, I promise that we'll consider a comeback for a full-size luxury convertible."

In terms of hardware, the Concept Ocean Drive gets a large grille, LED headlamps and taillamps, and bird’s-eye maple trim. It’s based on the S600 sedan and thus sports V-12 power. The soft-top car includes PRE-SAFE, DISTRONIC PLUS, and Brake Assist PLUS.
