It’s been 30 years since the first VW Golf hit market. Okay, it was originally dubbed the Rabbit, but despite a name change, it has largely followed the same basic philosophy for the past three decades. Designed to deliver “affordable” German technology, Volkswagen’s biggest global seller is back in fifth-generation form at this year’s Chicago Auto Show. Actually, there are two Golfs, a 2-door and a 4-door. And Dave Wicks, director of sales for Volkswagen of America, promises the ’07 models will come in at “similar prices to the fourth-generation models they replace.” The new Golf will feature a 150-horsepower 2.5-liter in-line four-cylinder engine, mated to either a five-speed stick or six-speed Tiptronic automatic. Buyers will be able to opt for 15-inch or 16-inch alloy wheels. The ’07 VW boasts a new variable rack-and-pinion steering system and the first-ever multilink rear suspension in a Golf.
