2002 Honda Civic: When Should I Change My Oil Filter?
Q--I own a 2002 Honda Civic with 82,000 miles on it. I have been changing the oil and filter every 5000 miles. I now have a new job that requires me to drive only three miles each way. The dealership said I should change oil and filter every 3000 or three months. I am confused. Your advice please.
A--I advise you to do what your dealer suggests. Short trips are very hard on the engine and its oil. Neither get a chance to fully warm up. When your engine cools down, condensation (water) can mix with the oil where it can form acids. Unless the engine warms up, then runs for 15 minutes or so, that condensation won't cook off. Short trips constitute severe usage per your owner's manual.
