Is it common for oil to spill when changing it in a 2001 Audi A4 and look like a transmission leak?

One mechanic said it might be a transmission leak but another mechanic said it was just an oil spill.

  • the 1.8 and 2.0 engines leak oil out of the rear of the valve cover, the oil goes everywhere from there, the power steering return pipe often gets hard and dribbles fluid down onto the under tray and it can drip anywhere from there
  • one is red the other clear cant mistake one for other
