Is it common for oil to spill when changing it in a 2001 Audi A4 and look like a transmission leak?
One mechanic said it might be a transmission leak but another mechanic said it was just an oil spill.

Considering the transmission is "sealed" it would be hard to tell if the transmission is leaking. It is a tiptronic right? The oil drain is close to the middle of the pan. Get it airborne (on a lift) and start looking. Reference:Own several Audis and VWs. Read More

the 1.8 and 2.0 engines leak oil out of the rear of the valve cover, the oil goes everywhere from there, the power steering return pipe often gets hard and dribbles fluid down onto the under tray and it can drip anywhere from there
