Is it possible to change a BMW M5's transmission from manual to automatic or automanual?

I am about to buy a BMW M5 with manual transmission and I was wondering if it is possible to convert it from manual to auto or automanual? If so, where can I get it done? How much will it cost?

  • Harley guy has no f*cking idea what he's talking about. It can be done, but it would cost an insane amount of money. The base e39 transmission does not mount up to the S62 V8 in the M5, so it would need custom adapters to fit, a custom driveshaft would be needed, and adapters like the Guibo disc would need to be... • Ryan, you're friggin brilliant. . . . As for you the questioner, the BMW Mafia would find you and burn you at the stake, and probably not even get prosecuted because they would make a brilliant case as to how you ruined one of the most beloved BMW's of all time. As for your question, just get a 540i with an automatic... Read More
  • What year? Next question put the year. The older better M5 BMWs 85 to 88 It can be done but the wiring needed would double the job. If you were going from AUTO to STICK it can be done quick and clean. The NEW junk M5's, automatics never have been offered. So far as I have seen and read. BUT this is possible, I think... Read More
  • get the e60 if you want an automatic (or find a rare e34 alpina) To switch an e39 m5 to an automatic would cost an insane amount of money - I'd venture at the least over 5k without even including the labor. Not to mention you would destroy the resale value because anyone buying an e39 m5 expects the 6spd.

If you just want the bmw for posing purchase any 5 series with an auto transmission and save some money....or do what most bmw posers do, purchase a... Read More

Other Choices:

Few mid-size luxury sedans can touch the BMW M5's performance, but the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG comes closest--and looks a bit more suave going about it, too. The newly minted Jaguar XF Supercharged is a few ticks slower, but it's far more handsome; a 500-horsepower XF-R is due in 2009. The Audi S6 has a massively powerful V-8, but it's still a step slower than the BMW.
