Sonata

2006 Hyundai Sonata - rear quarter
A redesigned mid-size Sonata sedan debuts for 2006 that's fully able to compete with the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry for less money. With a spacious interior that's larger than any of the mid-size Japanese competition, the redesigned Sonata comes wrapped in a more contemporary exterior, highlighted by a concave-domed hood, sweeping roofline, and jeweled projector headlamps. The base engine is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that's rated at a sufficient 162 horsepower; it can be mated to either a five-speed manual or four-speed Shiftronic automatic transmission that allows manual gear selection. Meanwhile, GLS V-6 and LX models get a new 3.3-liter V-6 engine that generates a strong 237 horses and is fitted to a new five-speed Shiftronic automatic gearbox. A four-wheel independent suspension features a double-wishbone array at the front and rear for exceptional cornering abilities, albeit with a ride that's on the soft side. Four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, traction control, and Electronic Stability Control all come standard along with front, front side, and side-curtain airbags, and with active front head restraints (to help reduce whiplash injuries). All Hyundais are backed by a five-year/60,000 comprehensive warranty, with ten-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain coverage.
