The flagship S-Class is all-new for 2007 and comes in one V-8 version — S550 with 382 horsepower — and two V-12 versions, the S600 and S65 AMG. The exterior design is much sleeker than previously, as well as wider and taller. The wheelbase is increased by 3.2 inches and the car’s overall length has grown by 1.7 inches. These changes provide an even more spacious interior, especially for rear-seat occupants. The cabin has been redesigned as well, with one very notable change being a simplified, easier-to-use version of Mercedes’ COMAND interface, which had been criticized previously for being overly complex. Other standout features of the new S-Class include the very latest version of Mercedes’ “smart” cruise control, called Distronic Plus. It is capable of automatically slowing the car to much lower speeds (as traffic conditions change) making it possible for the driver to “set and forget” the cruise control over a wider variety of operating conditions. There’s also a new infrared night-vision system and concert-hall-quality 14-speaker Harmon Kardon surround sound stereo with 14 speakers. The 2007 S-Class also offers a panorama-style roof, Active Body Control (ABC) suspension, and heated/ventilated front seats with built-in massager.
