The SLK roadster
is redesigned for 2005 as a larger vehicle, overall, with sleeker styling that
borrows cues from the automaker's SLR McLaren supercar. A new 3.5-liter V-6
engine uses variable valve timing to generate 268 horsepower, and drives the
rear wheels via a either six-speed-manual or a seven-speed-automatic gearbox
with TouchShift operation. The car rides on 17-inch alloy wheels and
performance tires, and a lowered sport suspension is offered for more-aggressive
motoring. The car's all-new interior is adorned with silver trim and switchgear,
with a dashboard that flows into the door panels and an instrument panel that
sports larger, chronograph-style gauges. As before it comes with a power
retractable hardtop, but a new "Airscarf" feature is said to extend the
convertible season in cooler climates by blowing warm air from vents located in
the driver and passenger's headrests. A premier clearcoat paint formula uses
nanotechnology for added resistance to scratches and dings. A V-8-powered AMG
model is expected to join the line within the coming year.
