Katrina strikes again: drivers say hurricanes shredded state’s highways.

Hurricane Katrina
Hurricane Katrina  |

Hurricanes Katrina and Rita pummeled the state ofLouisiana in 2005, and one more ripple effect is surfacing now. The state's roads have been voted the worst in the union by Overdrive magazine, the Alabama-based book for over-the-road truckers.

It was Louisiana 's first time scoring the dubious honor. More often, Pennsylvania 's roads - usually the state's Turnpike - are cited as the worst interstate in the U.S.  Louisiana, however, is a regular placer in the poll's top five.

The state's stretch of Interstate 10 was singled out as the worst road. Parts of the highway, including the bridges that link New Orleans to the eastern U.S., have been under reconstruction since Hurricane Katrina made landfall on August 29, 2005.

Pennsylvania finished second worst in voting, followed by California, Illinois, and Michigan.

Overdrive's Highway Report Card cites I-40 in Tennessee as the nation's best highway, with Texas' I-20 ranking second. And the stretch of I-40 that passes through Arkansas- a past Worst Road- was cited as the most improved highway in America.

Overall, Texas roads were voted the best, with Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, and Virginia rounding out the top five.

The best drivers in the country are in Texas, according to voters, while California has the worst.
