Detroit drama, Wagoner in a fight, and Wi-Fi goes auto.

2008 Chrysler Town & Country
2008 Chrysler Town & Country  |

Detroit's auto show opens on Sunday, and frankly, we're wondering what's left to see now that the Camaro Convertible, Chrysler minivans and the Interceptor are already live on the Internet. Pardon us for asking, but is there a print magazine that hasn't hit the newsstands yet, with "embargoed" info we missed?

So, Toyota finished the sales year at number three, and is sure to pass Ford in North American sales - not to mention as the nation's best-selling brand - in 2007. Here's a suggestion, and don't take it the wrong way, but maybe it would all be cool if they just called themselves American Motors?

Rick Wagoner says GM will fight for every sale - and isn't giving up yet to the Toyota juggernaut. Underlining his point, Wagoner reportedly clotheslined Ford's Alan Mulally, earning his first technical foul of the year. (It's a basketball joke, for the unwashed.)

Meanwhile, Mulally is promising Ford will have a completely new lineup by 2010. He later clarified that he was talking about products, not executives.

On another front, Ford paid our friends at Car and Driver to do a little test with the Fusion, Camry and Accord. And guess who finished best? The Fusion! We're all about the Benjamins when it comes to advertising, but hiring top guns to create ad fodder cuts a little close to the impartiality bone. If there is a bone named that. I mean, there are 206 bones in the human body. One of them has to be named impartiality.

We're so excited about the prospect of in-car Wi-Fi that we've sold our house and turned our SUV into a charming studio efficiency with a view of Jackson Square. In the next evolution of TheCarConnection, we'll simply transmit ideas telepathically and save the $49 a month subscription.

Finally, speaking of TheCarConnection, lots of you have noticed our new look and new partners. A few handy hints for navigating the new site: 1) read, then click 2) read some more, then click some more, and 3) remember that change comes from within. Nifty, huh?
