2004 Rolls-Royce Phantom

Phantom

Rolls-Royce undergoes a major transformation for '04, with all of last year's models dropped and one all-new model designed and engineered with assistance from new owner BMW. The new Phantom ultra-luxury sedan is powered by a 435-hp, 6.8-liter V-12 (in keeping with the 6.75-liter tradition), paired with a six-speed automatic transmission with power going to the rear wheels. Rear portals (rear-hinged doors) allow easier access to the cavernous back seat area. At around 5500 pounds, the Phantom is heavy, but the V-12 can bring it to 60 mph in less than six seconds. The roomy Phantom can be outfitted with several seat and trim options, and comes with a full array of airbags, plus stability control and an automatic leveling suspension. A twin-screen DVD system is also an option. BMW's controversial iDrive system, which controls many of the car's electronic accessories, is mandatory on the Phantom, as it is on BMW's 7-Series, except here it's called the Controller. Now that it's on it's own, the R-R brand is foregoing a little of its antiquated appeal in favor of more modern luxury features. Though price isn't really a factor for cars in this realm, expect the $320,000 super sedan to go head to head with Mercedes-Benz's similarly priced Maybach 57.
