They have been on sale elsewhere in the world for years, but the V40 wagon and S40 sedan have now reached U.S. shores. They are powered by a 1.9-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 160 horsepower.
70-Series
The S70 sedan and V70 wagon now are available with a new five-speed automatic, while normally aspirated five-cylinder models get a power boost to 168 horsepower for their 2.4 liters of displacement. High-pressure turbocharging gives the V70 R AWD's engine 261 horsepower from its 2.3 liters.
C70/Convertible
The 236-horsepower 2.4-liter high-pressure turbo engine is now available on both coupe and convertible models. Previously, only the 2.3-liter 190-horsepower light-pressure turbo engine was available with the convertible.
S80
All-new for 1999, the flagship is carried over mostly unchanged for 2000. Color changes and a few equipment updates have been made, including the introduction of a warm-weather package with sunshades. The S80 2.9 is powered by a 204-horsepower 2.9-liter in-line six, while the high-performance T-6 gets a twin-turbocharged 2.8-liter in-line six producing 272 horsepower.
