Cabrio

This pint-sized droptop continues with the old Golf chassis. Look for the new Cabrio to reach our shores next year. Until then, the current model soldiers on with few changes. A 115-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine powers it.

Eurovan

Reintroduced to the U.S. market in 1999, the Eurovan gets new reading lights in the rear of GLS models and dark tinted glass as well as optional single seats to replace the second-row bench that is standard. It continues to be powered by a 2.8-liter 140-horsepower V-6 engine mated to a four-speed automatic transmission.

GTI

Beside the changes made to the 2000 Golf, the GTI gets an optional eight-speaker Monsoon audio system and acceleration slip regulation on V-6 models. A 115-horsepower 2.0-liter four and a 2.8-liter 174-horsepower V-6 are available under the hood of this hatchback.

Golf

New for 1999, the Golf gets minor updates, including a brake-wear indicator and a dealer-installed in-dash CD player. Engine choices include a 115-horsepower 2.0-liter four and a 1.9-liter 92-horsepower turbocharged diesel engine.

Jetta

All-new for 1999, Volkswagen's best seller gets minor updates, including an optional high-performance Monsoon audio system, a brake-wear indicator, and a dealer-installed in-dash CD player. The Jetta can be had with a 115-horsepower 2.0-liter four, a 2.8-liter 174-horsepower V-6 and a 1.9-liter 92-horsepower turbocharged diesel engine.

New Beetle

VW's lovable, huggable signature car gets a couple of minor updates, such as a brake-wear indicator and improved theft protection. Anti-slip regulation is now standard on 1.8T GLS and GLX versions. A 1.8-liter 150-horsepower four-cylinder, a 1.9-liter 92-horsepower turbodiesel, and a 115-horsepower 2.0-liter four are all available with both manual and automatic transmissions.

Passat

The big news for Volkswagen's U.S. flagship is the availability of four-motion all-wheel drive for the 2000 model-year. The car also gets minor updates, including an optional high-performance Monsoon audio system, a brake-wear indicator, dealer-installed in-dash CD player as well as new color and trim combinations. The Passat comes in wagon and sedan body styles, with a 1.8-liter 150-horsepower turbocharged four and a 2.8-liter 190-horsepower V-6. Either engine can be had with either a five-speed automatic or a five-speed manual transmission.
