Second-gen smart gets power, styling mods.

As part of its grand turnaround plan, announced a year ago at the Geneva Motor Show, DaimlerChrysler's smart brand abandoned several weak-selling models, but that doesn't mean it's become a one-trick pony. Last November, Smart unveiled an all-new version of the two-seat micro fortwo model, and Geneva brings two new variants of the urban commuter car, the high-performance BRABUS and BRABUS Xclusiv.

Smart says both BRABUS versions get a new engine with 30-percent more power than the first-generation editions. The new Brabii have 98 hp, giving them a power-to-weight ratio some 24-percent better than the last version and fuel economy of about 45 mpg.

The BRABUS edition, smart says, includes other tweaks beyond the uprated 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine - which pushes the two-seater to 62 mph in less than ten seconds. Monoblock VI alloy wheels fit into wider wheel arches, and a sport suspension setup drops it 15 mm. A more sporting exhaust note and fog lights dress up the tall profile, while inside, special trim accents the gearshift, handbrake, and pedals.

The BRABUS Xclusive, meanwhile, adds on tinted headlight covers and side skirts, along with heated leather seats and a three-spoke, leather-trimmed steering wheel. Leatherette trim adorns the petite cabin, while side airbags are standard on this limited edition. The Xclusive only comes in silver or black.

The basic, second-generation Smart fortwo is designed to provide "carefree, livable mobility" in crowded cities, like Geneva , noted Ulrich Walker, outgoing president of the DC division. And "it reflects the mood of the times," especially in Europe, where more and more motorists are looking for ways to get around while reducing the production of global warming carbon dioxide. With its optional diesel powertrain, the European version of the pint-sized fortwo gets nearly 72 miles per gallon and produces little more than half the CO2 European regulators have targeted for future emissions standards - rules few manufacturers expect to be able to meet anytime soon.

Prices for both editions will be announced before they go on sale in the fall of 2007.
