The Ministry of Economy and Trade is working with the auto industry in Japan on what's called the next generation vehicle and fuel economy initiative, designed to make a "more enjoyable world for drivers and non-drivers alike," says Suzuki.

Part one is the PIXY, a single-person machine that can be used on sidewalks and inside buildings. Think enclosed Segway and you won't be far off, though the PIXY's wheel motions probably don't infringe on the Segway's patented gyrations. Two PIXYs will fit in the back of the SSC ("Suzuki Sharing Coach"), and a trio as such will form a complete automobile, Suzuki says.

The SSC can recharge the Pixys from its fuel cell or solar panels while it speeds along to the usual destinations.

The PIXY can also be teamed with an SSF sports-car unit, or with a boat vehicle, the SSJ. Sadly, none of those pieces of vaporware were on display in Tokyo. - Ken Zino
