Mitsubishi’s stand at the Frankfurt show featured traditional Japanese drummers and dancers, but the concept that pulled onto the stand after the show was anything but traditional. The cX concept is Mitsubishi’s idea of what urban drivers would want in a compact utility vehicle — while preserving driving pleasure.

Sized to share components with the new Lancer lineup, the cX stresses affordability and sustainability, from its clean-diesel engine to its dual-clutch gearbox. The engine is a 134-hp version of Mitsubishi’s upcoming clean diesel, a 1.8-liter four with variable geometry turbocharging and particulate filters. It’s coupled to a Twin Clutch transmission, reviving an old Mitsu badge for what is essentially the company’s version of the VW DSG idea, with clutchless shifting.

Though it’s been conceived as an on-road performer, the cX does sport some SUV-like credentials, like the split hatch in back. It also sports all-wheel drive derived from that in the new Outlander, including a locking four-wheel-drive range.

Styling is said to be derived from jets, down to the grille already in use on the Lancer lineup. Inside, the cX goes green with plant-based resins used in trim pieces and carpeting. A panoramic rear glass gives rear passengers a better view of the world outside.

Mitsubishi calls the cX a concept but a production crossover of this size and shape seems a sure thing. The next stop on the company’s auto-show tour, in Tokyo , likely will showcase the new generation Lancer Evo.
