Mazda says its newly introduced Mazda2 subcompact will be built inChina for Chinese customers, expanding Ford's presence in the country.
The announcement was made at this week's Shanghai auto show.
The 2 will be built at the Changan Ford Mazda plant in Nanjing, by partner Changan Automobile group. The new model will be tailored for specific needs of the Chinese market, which Mazda did not specify.
Mazda says its production system will be used in the assembly process in China, where it will have capacity to build 160,000 subcompacts a year. The plant will sport "cutting-edge eco-friendliness, efficiency, and an employee-friendly working environment," Mazda said in a release.
Production will begin by year's end. By 2010, Mazda hopes to sell 300,000 vehicles a year in China.
