BMW takes a beating, right along with the domestics.

Twomey dislikes M6; is that so wrong?

  |
I am SO glad to see that I'm not the only person who considers the M6 as slightly ridiculous. As it was, I found the E63 6-Series to be, like you said, a travesty, but my opinion is based almost entirely on the design.

The M version not only didn't help, it made things worse. The front and rear fascia look ridiculous and the car in general so ridiculously ostentatious that I'm a little confused as to whether or not it's really a BMW. The motor and a lot of the stuff under the skin are great, I'm sure, but there's something to be said of presentation. And iDrive. Honestly, it's not THAT bad (I myself have an '06 330i with iDrive) but in comparison to other systems like, shall we say, Audi's MMI, it's a joke.

I admit that I was once an ardent BMW fan but with the direction the company's taken with Bangle and co. leading, I can't help but lean back toward Audi. I went from a 2001 S4 to my 330i and coming up on one year, I still can't stop doing double-takes at some of the Audi models. BMW of yore, where did you go?

You see, the problem here is that you're probably not a tasteless, self-aggrandizing, Bluetooth-headset-wearing-even-when-not-on-the-phone rich bastard. Did I mention that buyers of this car have no taste? Maybe I did.

The world NEEDS cars like this. They point out which wealthy people have personalities better left uninvestigated even from afar. Perhaps BMW could do us a favor and add a feature to the car that irradiates their testicles as they drive. Sterilization is the only workable answer!

I have read a lot of "BMW Hater" articles over the past few years. Most of the writers of these articles just won't admit they don't like BMWs and try to justify their hate by crying about iDrive or exterior styling. But if you can enjoy driving a car that is as beautiful and powerful has the BMW M6, then you need to quit your job reviewing cars. This is not the occupation for you. This article is BMW hate just for the sake of it. You expect us to believe you had no fun driving BMW's ultimate coupe! If you decide to continue reviewing cars, I think you should stay away from BMWs.

A bit too much for the real world.

The ethanol photo op

Incredible. I watched the Detroit CEOs drive up to the U.S. Capitol last week to push for increased ethanol use, a laudable idea. The problem was their choice of vehicles for this photo op. The Ford and GM bosses arrived in gargantuan pickup trucks (an F-150 and an Avalanche), which perfectly illustrated one of the reasons gasoline prices are on the rise. Mr. Ford and Mr. Wagoner could have chosen to set an example and make a statement by driving a Focus and a Cobalt respectively, but they only served to reinforce the curious American notion that bigger is indeed better when it comes to vehicle choices.

Caliber rant

I got stuck with a Dodge Caliber when I tried to rent an "economy" car in New Orleans a couple weeks ago. They gave me the automatic model, not the five-speed. Want to know what my real-time mileage was? Eighteen in town, 22 on the road. I drove it from New Orleans to Memphis to Little Rock , total of about 600 miles on some exceedingly flat terrain.

Other noted design flaws or irritations:

No trunk! That ridiculous spring-loaded cover for the back area only partially covers the section over the spare tire. It doesn't cover any of the rest of the area if the back seats are flattened forward.

Seat: Man, that's one uncomfortable driver's seat. My butt was sore in less than 100 miles, and I barely weigh 180. Prediction: early failure/extreme discomfort, leading to eventual chronic tailbone bruising.

Knee room: As you pointed out in your review, where's my right knee supposed to go? I kept banging it into the key ring and the bottom of the column.

White-lit dash gauges: Holy Blind Willie McTell, Batman! It was tough to find a happy medium between so bright that you're blinded at night by your own gauges and bright enough to read them without squinting. It's almost as dumb an idea as Saturn putting its gauges in the middle of the dash underneath the rearview mirror.

Would I buy a Caliber? ROFLMAO!

Ford's hybrid hoopla

Reading today's press release from Ford trumpeting their success with the Escape and Mariner hybrid sales left me a little bemused. It is indicative of the issues facing Ford that they are making such hoopla over this. It is maybe a small glimmer of good(ish) news in an otherwise bleak picture for the company.
