Explorer

Ford's best-selling SUV gets a freshening for 2006 that includes a number of structural and mechanical updates designed to reduce noise and improve handling, revised front and rear exterior styling, and an updated dashboard inside the cabin. It continues to deliver solid all-around performance and comfort, with a roomy interior that can be fitted with a third-row seat for the kids, and equipped with a full range of popular features. A 210-horsepower V-6 is standard, while an available 4.6-liter V-8 powerplant provides an added surge of power, which is now up to 292 horses (up 53 from last year's V-8). For 2006 the V-8 comes mated to a new six-speed automatic transmission. There's a choice of Ford's ControlTrac four-wheel drive or full-time all-wheel-drive systems, with the latter preferred for on-road use. Ford's AdvanceTrac system with Roll Stability Control is standard across the line, with the Safety Canopy side-curtain airbag system optional; it deploys when it senses an impending roll over is about to happen and stays inflated for a few seconds in case the vehicle flips multiple times. Sirius satellite radio is newly available this year.
